State Fair of Texas, "Mundo Latino"

September 26 to October 19,2008

 

 

 

Dulce Parker, Co-founder of the Association and owner of D'Caribbean Gifts will be participating again in the "Mundo Latino" 'exhibit at the Hall of State building during the State Fair of Texas.

 

She is representing the Dominican Republic. Her booth promotes the Dominican Culture and she is showing/selling Caribbean Artesania (Arts & Crafts), Munecas sin caras, Paintings, Mahogany Wood Carvings, and beautiful handcrafted jewelry made from Ambar and Larimar (a rare blue semiprecious stone only found in the Dominican Republic.) Lone Star Storytelling Festival

Frisco Storytelling Festival

Mayra Diaz,MLS, Youth Services Supervisor of the Frisco Public Library and a Dominican Association member, is participating in the 2 day, 2 nights of 'top-notch' entertainment by six of the nation's top storytellers and entertainers. Enjoy Texas tales, fables, hilarious misadventures, rollicking anecdotes, and toe-tapping tunes; all under the huge tent canopies at Frisco Square. In addition to the story concerts, you'll experience puppet shows, musicians, and folk arts & crafts; providing family fun and entertainment for all ages.

Bring a 'first time attendee' to the festival and you and your friend will get a gift bag. Only 200 bags will be given away so come early!

The Writer's Garret is very excited to announce that they are bringing Junot Diaz, a wonderful Dominican author and 2008 Pulitzer Prize winner, to Dallas for an interview and book reading in front of a live audience. His stories are all about his experiences as a Dominican-American immigrant. Let's have as many as we can attend. Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author JUNOT DIAZ
opens the highly acclaimed
WRITERS STUDIO SERIES at the DMA

JUNOT DIAZ, 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning author, is the featured guest at this season's opening of The Writers Studio, Sunday, September 14, 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Horchow Auditorium of the Dallas Museum of Art, 1717 North Harwood Street, Dallas, Texas. Diaz gives a combination reading and interview presented by The Writer's Garret and hosted by Randy Gordon and Yolette Garcia.

About Junot Diaz
Junot Diaz (born in the Dominican Republic, raised in the USA) received the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his debut novel, "The Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao."

He has written several short stories that have been published in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and Story, and has also been part of the anthologies "The Best American Short Stories" and "African Voices."
His short story collection "Drown," published in 1996, was a New York Times Notable Book, an ALA Best Book of the Year, and was one of The Village Voice's 25 Best Books of the Year.

Diaz has won several awards including the Eugene McDermott Award, the Lila Wallace “Reader's Digest Writers"  Award, the PEN/Malamud Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study Fellowship, a U.S.-Japan Creative Artists Fellowship from the NEA, and most recently the Rome Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

5 pm FREE Family Fiesta! with Latin American storytelling, folkloric dance workshops from Chile / Spain / Mexico, Capoeira (Brazilian martial arts), mimes and Afro-Latino drumming.

8 pm 2nd Annual Fiesta Latinoamericana! with dance, live music, theater, and film featuring MEXICO: Carlos Fuentes, SPAIN: Miguel Hernandez, CHILE: Victor Jara, and ARGENTINA: Horacio Quiroga.
